Holding the Guitar

Proper posture is one of the biggest factors in how quickly you improve.

Seated posture checklist

1. Sit on the front half of your chair with your back tall (not rigid).
2. Keep both feet flat on the floor.
3. Rest the guitar body against your torso so the neck points slightly upward.
4. Keep your fretting wrist relaxed and avoid collapsing it inward.
5. Keep your shoulders down and your jaw relaxed.

Fretting-hand basics

• Put your thumb behind the neck, roughly opposite your middle finger.
• Curl your fingers so you press with your fingertips, not the flat pads.
• Press just behind the fret wire for a cleaner note with less force.

Picking-hand basics

• Rest your forearm lightly on the guitar body.
• Use small, controlled motions.
• Keep a loose grip on the pick so your hand stays relaxed.

Your First Exercise

This drill builds control and helps you produce clean sound right away.

Exercise: Open-string accuracy (3 minutes)

1. Pick string 6 (low E) four times slowly.
2. Move to string 5 and repeat.
3. Continue through all six strings.
4. Reverse direction and come back to string 6.

Goal: every note should be clear, even, and free of buzzing.

Exercise: First fretted notes (5 minutes)

1. Place index finger on the 1st fret of string 1 and play 4 times.
2. Move to middle finger on 2nd fret, same string, 4 times.
3. Ring finger on 3rd fret, same string, 4 times.
4. Repeat on strings 2 and 3.

Tip: press only as hard as needed for a clean tone.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid

• Holding your breath while playing.
• Pressing too hard with the fretting hand.
• Letting the guitar neck drop too low.
• Practicing too fast before notes are clean.

Minimum daily practice target

Practice this lesson for 10 minutes per day for 5 days before moving on.
